Dawei Wang started learning piano while he was 4 year old. He began to compose and conduct orchestra when he was 18. At the age of 24, he was enrolled into the Music School of Shanghai Teachers University. While at the University, he served as the Conductor of the University Orchestra. At the same time, he also served as the Vice President of and Conductor of the Youth Chorus of Shanghai Children’s Palace. Between 1982 and 1989, Wang was the Director of Music Education & Research Center in Shanghai College of Education. Currently, Wang is member of China Musician Association Shanghai Branch.
While he was undergraduate student, he composed a one-act opera named The Song of the Rhine River, which won the first place in Creation in Second National University Student Performance held in 1981. At that time, he also composed a song Farewell, My Old School which won the title of Outstanding Composing Award and it was played by Shanghai Broadcasting Radio Station. In the last twenty years, Wang has composed many orchestra music, songs, and Chinese traditional dance music. In 1995, he composed the music for the Chinese traditional dance Tang Charm, which was performed by the Shanghai Song and Dance Troupe. Wang was thus invited as guest conductor for Shanghai Song and Dance Troupe from then on. In addition, many of his musical compositions are used as music text material for colleges and universities throughout China, particularly in Shanghai area.
